Sissel Kyrkjebø
The nightingale from Norway with the angelic voice. I gave up the dream of her becoming my wife. I should probably be satisfied if security allows me within 100 meters of her...

About a song

I accidentally surf to a webpage and find a song named "Juster Tribute" by THOMAS GIERTSEN & SISSEL. Does anyone have any idea about this song? What is it about? Thanks.

Pølsemaker

That was a tribute song for Leif Juster, a Norwegian comedian who died in 1995. The song was recorded a few years after he died. The name of the song is actually "Pølsemaker." Thomas Giertsen raps about how great and funny he was, etc. It's one of my favorite Sissel songs, especially how Sissel's voice sounds like a flute at the end.

Thanks to Mikael Bjerregaard for providing the lyrics to this song. These are the Norwegian lyrics. If you want an English translation, that will take me a couple of days, as I'm swamped with other projects at the moment.

melodi: Sting
tekst: Thomas Giertsen (1971-)

Giertsen:
Kom igjen, kom igjen

Sissel:
Rare Langemand
Du var ikke sann
Rare Langemand
Ingen var som han

Rare Langemand

Giertsen:
(Pølsemaker, pølsemaker)

Sissel:
Lille Leifegutt
hvorfor tok det slutt?
Lille Leifegutt
alltid full av krutt
Hvorfor tok det slutt?

Giertsen:
Kom igjen, kom igjen

Juster

Min sjel

Min ånd

Sissel:
Rare Langemand
Du var ikke sann
Rare Langemand
Ingen var som han

Rare Langemand

Giertsen:
(Pølsemaker, pølsemaker)

Sissel:
Lille Leifegutt,
hvorfor tok det slutt?
Lille Leifegutt,
alltid full av krutt
Hvorfor tok det slutt

Kan du fortelle meg?
Rett for scenen steg du inn i himlen?
Vi ses Leifegutt

Engler synger for den lange kroppen
Vi ses Leifegutt

Lille Leifegutt,
hvorfor tok det slutt?
Lille Leifegutt,
alltid full av krutt

Hvorfor tok det slutt?

Here is an English translation of the song. The original lyrics are much more poetic and melodic. I've just tried to give you the closest meaning here. There are several cultural references in the lyrics, which I've explained in footnotes below.

Giertsen:
Come again, come again
This is for everyone who has lost someone
That they really care for
OK, come again

I remember evenings at Edderkoppen (1)
Everyone laughed at that lanky body
You sang "Pølsemaker, pølsemaker" (2)
Now you have gone to meet your creator

While Frøland (3) dug himself in furs
You were our hero in "Fjols till fjells" (4)
Only 89 so it ended
So sad to lose you Leife-boy

No one knew the pain you carried
It wasn't easy being thin and strange
You drowned your sorrows and lost control
Ended up on a spree with Carsten Byhring (5)

It's not right (mot normalt) (6) that you are gone
You played a revue like none else has done
You were the revue king Leif
Never played it safe
Not a bit of stage fright
Now you are gone

Sissel:
Odd, lanky man
You were unreal
Odd, lanky man
No one was like him

Odd, lanky man

Giertsen:
(Pølsemaker, pølsemaker)

Sissel:
Little Leif-boy
Why did it end?
Little Leif-boy
Always such a livewire
Why did it end?

Giertsen:
Come again, come again

I am unable to enjoy my own success
Even though you are dead, I must make people laugh
You should've been on Mandagsklubben (7)
Instead it was him, the old, bald man

It's hard to lose your best friend
But I know we'll soon see each other again
Ate 20 valium in one gulp (8)
Would do anything to see you again and Kjaffs (9)

When we once again meet at the pearly gates
I'll be ready in a smoking jacket
We'll play a revue like never before
For an audience that never dies

With God and Jesus on the front row
All of Paradise will laugh so hard
You were my father, tall and strange
I've never missed anyone as much

Juster

My soul

My spirit

Sissel:
Odd, lanky man
You were unreal
Odd, lanky man
No one was like him

Odd, lanky man

Giertsen:
(Pølsemaker, pølsemaker)

Sissel:
Little Leif-boy
Why did it end?
Little Leif-boy
Always such a livewire
Why did it end?

Can you tell me?
Right before going onstage, did you climb into heaven?
We'll see each other Leif-boy

Angels sing for that lanky body
We'll see each other Leif-boy

Little Leif-boy
Why did it end?
Little Leif-boy
Always such a livewire

Why did it end?

(1) Edderkoppen (The Spider) was a theatre in Oslo, which Leif Juster and his wife opened in 1942. It was one of the most important theatres for comedians in Norway. The theatre has continued in various locales to the present time.

(2) "Pølsemaker, pølsemaker" (Sausage maker, sausage maker) is a song Juster is known for, which he performed in the movie "Den forsvundne pølsemaker" (The Vanished Sausage Maker). This film role first made him famous across all of Norway. You can see him on YouTube performing this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfKkI60c3gk

(3) Frøland here refers to one of Leif Juster's best friends Dag Frøland who was also a comedian and frequent impersonator of Juster. Frøland also directed Juster in several of his earliest plays and produced his comedy album "En glad gutt" (A happy boy) in 1976.

(4) "Fjols til Fjells" (Idiot in the mountains) is a 1957 comedy starring Juster, which is considered by many to be the best Norwegian film of all time.

(5) Carsten Byhring is a Norwegian actor best known for his role as Kjell in the Oslobanden films.

(6) The original words Giertsen sings here "mot normalt" is also the name of one of Juster's most famous comedy sketches. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHT_Lu0OoAI

(7) Mandagsklubben (Monday's club) was a satire TV show on TV-Norge in which Thomas Giertsen was one of the regular contributors.

(8) I'm not entirely sure, but I think this line may refer to a scene in "Fjols til Fjells" where Juster's character swallows a bunch of pills.

(9) Kjaffs or tjafs? I'm not sure what this refers to. Mikael has Kjaffs here, someone else online has the word "tjafs" in the lyrics here. I don't understand either in this context. Kjaffs can be a person's name, but not sure who Kjaffs is.

Stenar,

Thank you so much.

Why haven't they release this song in any of her album? I really feel puzzled how Sissel's recording company has been operating. It seems to me that some of Sissel's projects are in vain even though she has put in a huge effort. For an example, I attended one of her concerts in the US and I found that the tickets were sold poorly. I have a feeling that she won't tour in the US any more.

This song was Thomas Giertsen's project, not Sissel's. And it was released only on Giertsen's website as a free download.

Unfortunately, the record labels Sissel has worked with have no idea how to market her, which is extremely frustrating... and I think you may be right about her never touring the USA any more. I feel she might have given up on the USA.
